The first stepping stone to beginning a career on the Youngstown Fire Department is to take the Civil Service Examination. It is held every two to three years. The city fire chief determines when the exams are held. After a testing date is chosen, it is announced in the local papers, the Youngstown Vindicator and the Warren Tribune Chronicle. I have also seen the test advertised in the Youngstown State University Jambar. I am not affiliated with the fire department and have no advanced warning when one is offered. I will post the ad and testing dates here on this page if I see it so please check periodically. If you live in the area, please check the Youngstown Vindicator's local section and in the classified section for civil service posts.
Here is a copy of the 2000 Youngstown Fire Department Exam announcement. It gives a job description, qualifications, talks about the physical agility test and what to expect, and bonuses. It then gives a detailed account of what will be on the physical agility portion of the exam. The document is in PDF format. View the 2000 YFD Exam Announcement.
