The members of the Youngstown Fire Department are a battle-hardened group. The city of Youngstown once boasted an impressive population of 170,000 in the 1930's and had a thriving steel industry. Today, the mills are all but gone. The population now hovers around 77,000 and the city is working to diversify its economic base and demolish much of its vacant housing stock. Today, burning vacant homes and apartment buildings are commonplace. And when the call is received, the men and women of the Youngstown Fire Department are there. These are just some of their battles.
