ABOUT THE BUREAU: The Bureau of Fire Prevention and Inspection was established in the early 1940's. Today the bureau is staffed by four full time fire inspectors under the direction of Chief Inspector Hubert D. Clardy, Jr.

PURPOSE: The Bureau of Fire Prevention and Inspection has many responsibilities. It's members are in charge of enforcing Ohio Fire and Building codes. They are responsible for educating the public on matters of fire safety. They test alarm systems in public buildings to ensure that they are in proper working order. They inspect public buildings such as schools, hospitals, nursing and group homes, high rises, day cares and preschools and many others. The Bureau of Fire Prevention and Inspection also review proposed buildings and order changes to the drawings based upon building and fire code requirements. The following is a brief list of some of the other responsibilities of the Bureau of Fire Prevention and Inspection. 

- Installation, removal, upgrades and precision testing of underground and above ground storage tanks.
- Determine the number of people permitted it occupy a building or place of assembly.Image05.jpg (47627 bytes)
- Manage the storage of Hazardous Materials in a structure.
- Help develop Emergency Management procedures including building egress.
- Write citations or summons to court for failure to comply with the codes.
- Testify as experts in a court of law with regards to fire prevention and inspections.
- Oversee firework storage and firework displays.
- Educate school children and faculty on fire prevention.
- Educate businesses on Ohio State Health Association (OSHA) rules.
- Test building alarm systems, sprinkler systems, standpipe systems, fire pumps and hood suppression systems.
- Distribute free smoke detectors annually.
- Help teach fire safety using the Neely Kids Safety Trailer in cooperation with the Mahoning Valley Safe Kids Coalition.
- Plan and oversee Fire Prevention Day each year.


PARTNERSHIPS: Members of the Bureau of Fire Prevention and Inspection work in tandem with the Building Department, Zoning, Law Department, CDA, Engineering Department, Clerk of Courts, Finance Department, Electrical Inspectors, Health Department, EPA, State Fire Marshal, Bureau of Underground Storage Regulations and a wide variety of other local, state and federal agencies.
