YOUNGSTOWN, OH – Youngstown Firefighters were called to the Four Seasons Flea Market at 3000 McCartney Road at 4:30pm on Thursday June 5, 2008 for a reported commercial structure fire. Engines 6, 12, and 7, Squad 33, Ladder 22 and Battalions 1 and 2 responded on the initial structure fire alarm.

Engine 6 was the first in engine company and reported heavy fire showing from the commercial building. The 2nd in Engine hooked up to a nearby hydrant. A 2nd alarm was quickly transmitted bringing Youngstown Engines 3, 2, and 9, Ladder 24 and Fire Control (the City Fire Chief) to the scene.

Ladder 22 was positioned in the east side parking lot and set up for operation. Ladder 24 reported to the Jacobs Road (west) side of the structure and began operations.

Crews attempted to enter the main part of the building to try and stop the fire’s advance. They quickly backed out as the fire had spread throughout the attic area of the renovated 50 year old former airport hanger. Crews switched to the defensive and mutual aid was requested from neighboring communities. The City of Campbell, Poland Township, Coitsville Township and Mahoning Twp and Pulaski Twp in Pennsylvania responded.

Campbell put their 1971 American LaFrance Ladder into operation on the McGuffey (south) side of the building. Poland, Coitsville, Mahoning Twp and Pulaski set up a water shuttle to provide water for the crews protecting exposures on the east side of the complex.

The fire is believed to have started in one of three buildings that were connected to the main building on the north side of the complex. The fire quickly engulfed all three newer additions as well as the main building.

The main building was constructed in 1941 as an airport hanger for the Bernard Airport which closed in 1951. The building then housed what was believed to be the first Discount Store to open in the United States. The Four Seasons Flea Market purchased the building and began operations there in 1991. The Flea Market is only open on Wednesdays and Sundays and no one was in the building at the time of the fire. No word yet on the cause. The owner of the building says he plans on rebuilding and that the outdoor vendors will be open.
